PRÉLUDE
Chamber Music · 2020 · 4 minutes
For violin and piano
About the work
Prélude was composed in Antwerp in Autumn 2020 for violinist Nicolas Dupont and pianist Olga Kirpicheva, as a musical introduction to Claude Debussy's Sonata for Violin and Piano in G minor. Drawing on Bulgarian folk traditions, the composition combines expressive, lyrical writing with dance-like rhythms, distinctive harmonic colours and ornamentation.
The violin moves between a romantic, singing quality and the more spontaneous character of folk fiddle playing, incorporating glissandi, delicate sul tasto passages and melodic figures that change subtly through repetition. The piano provides a rich harmonic landscape, blending resonances and textures while maintaining clarity between the instrumental lines.
