VOIX LOINTAINES
Cello duet · 2025 · ca. 4 minutes
About the work
Voix Lointaines (Distant Voices) was composed in August 2025 for cellists India Gailey and Leah Plave. The work grew from a deeply personal memory of my graduation recital at Acadia University in 2015, which took place just two months after my mother's death.
At the end of the performance, I found myself overwhelmed by the emotions of the preceding months. As I left the stage, India was waiting in the wings, and we embraced while the applause continued behind us. It was a moment of vulnerability and friendship that has remained with me ever since.
Composing this work for India and Leah brought me back to those memories, and particularly to my mother's love of melody. Voix Lointaines became a way of remembering her voice, the sounds of home, and the presence of someone who is no longer there.
Released on the album ‘They Way Appears’.
